Vorig jaar hadden we bij Emid een discussie over welke software we nou eigenlijk moesten gebruiken etc. Dit leidde al snel tot het inzicht dat de software niet bepalend is, maar de openheid van bestandsformaten en platform onafhankelijkheid van toepassingen. Kortom: Iedereen moet zelf bepalen waar hij of zij mee werkt, zolang de info maar uitwisselbaar is.
Dit maakt het mogelijk om Macs, Windows-PC’s, Linux-boxen etc. door elkaar heen te gebruiken… Leuk om te zien dat dit nu ook haalbaar blijkt voor het mobiele platform… zolang je maar Google Apps gebruikt natuurlijk :(.

Dit soort hulpmiddelen werken alleen wanneer veel mensen van hetzelfde gebruik maken.
Uiteraard wil ieder bedrijf zoveel mogelijk verdienen en is er dus op gebrand om meer gebruikers naar zijn eigen platform te trekken voor de reclame-inkomsten. Zolang dit model op reclame-inkomsten gebaseerd is zal het alleen maar erger worden en zullen de tools als paddestoelen uit de grond blijven schieten.

A question that I often come across during my conversations with senior executives is “what is the impact of web 2.0 strategies and tools from an enterprise perspective?’  Many have difficulties providing a quick answer while they were quick to provide examples of how Web 2.0 innovation has been creating new applications for consumer uses. I believe these innovations are finding their way into the enterprises. Enterprise 2.0 doesn’t really exist today other than a few software companies (content management) renaming themselves. The question is why? There are many answers to that.

Zo kort op de eerste post in deze reeks weer een vervolg. Om handen en voeten aan dit projectje te geven heb ik vastgelegd welke functionaliteiten ondersteund moeten worden en welke randvoorwaarden daarbij gelden:

Opsomming functionaliteit / toepassingen:

- Calendar / Tasks
- EMail- Mobility enhancements (PDA syncronization)
- Document management / Document sharing
- Collaboration  / Forum / Knowlegde base
- Instant Messaging
- Office productivity (Wordprocessing, Spreadsheet, Presentation)
- Image / photo editing, screencapturing
- Audio / Video playback (+ codecs: mp3, wma, avi, divx, mpeg, mov, aac etc.)
- Development Tools (IDE, texteditor (highlighting / suggest), HTML / XML / XSL editor)
- Support Tools (Problemtracking / reporting)
- Server / application monitoring
- Server management (remote control / remote desktop)
- Filemanagement (FTP , P2P)
- Virtualisation Software

Deze functionaliteiten moeten met één of meerdere toepassingen worden ondersteund. Uiteraard kan één toepassing / service meerdere functionaliteiten in één keer afdekken. We moeten expliciet kijken naar online / webbased toepassingen zodat de noodzaak voor client-side software zo klein mogelijk is. Dit heeft 2 (of meer???) redenen:

1. “Thin clients” zijn stabieler, sneller en hebben minder beheer nodig
2. Gebruik van online toepassingen met centrale opslag en de mogelijkheid tot delen van deze informatie maakt “plaats en tijd-onafhankelijk werken” mogelijk.
3. ????

Voorwaarde is wel dat:

1. Mobiel / offline werken mogelijk blijft (laptop in de trein of wanneer er geen netwerkconnectie aanwezig is.
2. Kosten gelijk blijven, zo niet, lager worden (wel rekening houden met indirecte kosten zoals het onzichtbare beheer).
3. keuze voor oplossingen toekomstvast of in iedere geval “portable” zijn. Overstappen naar andere service provider of toepassing moet daardoor mogelijk blijven. Dit noodzaakt tot “modulaire” opzet. Een toepassing die zeer veel functionaliteit afdekt is vaak daardoor niet portable voor delen van die functionaliteit.
4. Uitwisseling van informatie / documenten met klanten gewaarborgd is.
5. ????

Taxonomies are often the domain of information specialists within an organisation. A small group of documentalists that “know how to archive documents”. But within the modern enterprise the information is growing and growing and nobody wants to use the strict taxonomies that make their work harder to do. Adding metadata from picklists is not the most fun thing todo.

Bringing social software and community-thinking to the enterprise is a way to overcome the problems. The methods used on the internet can also be used within the enterprise. Tagging documents on the intranet, bookmarking or recommending documents, creating the possibility to react on news or documents on the internet can help upgrading the quality of informatie. This leverages the enterprise search potential because the added metadata can be used to better index, search and find the information requested by the employee.

Excellent artcile on Intranet Blog about Portal software, CMS-software, integration with business systems and the complexity it brings. You can have a portal without portal software and many product don’t have the best of the breed.

Take search. Almost always companies are using Autonomy, Endece etc. for enterprise search because the search solution that comes with the portal or CMS product is not good enough. Remember that we are talking about large companies that are investing much $ in Portal software and information technology so the results has to be good. Portal products are good in bringing information and applications to the user in an structured way. I see a different in Enterprise Information Portals and Enterprise Application Portals. They can be combined but often the latter is more proces driven.

Wiki’s are becoming more and more a serious alternative for collaboration tools. A few company’s are building CMS-functionality around the “wiki way” to improve the way that users can manage content on the web. In an article on ecommerce times (E-Commerce News: Reviews: Wikis as Collaboration Tools) 4 enterprise wiki tools are reviewed.
