Yep… things are really shaking up in the enterprise search world. Now some major companies are buying there way in (Microsoft for example), others are deploying solutions of their own (Google). With the injection of money from SAP, this major player in the ERP market is trying to get a piece of the action. The search solutions of SAP are there but not that advanced. Endeca is smaller than Autonomy and therefore easier to guide……

Intel and SAP Put $15 Million Into Enterprise-Search Company Endeca
Two weeks after Microsoft announced its $1.2 billion acquisition of FAST Search & Transfer, enterprise-search competitor Endeca is getting a $15 million cash infusion from Intel and SAP.

Dana Gardner tries to describe the information access landscape regarding to companies but doesn’t come any further than Google, IBM and Oracle. He “forgets” to mention the real information access players like Endeca and Autonomy. This illustrates the narrow sight that Dana has.

Ever notice that Microsoft — with cash to burn apparently — waits for the obvious to become inevitable and then ends up paying huge premiums for companies in order to catch up to reality? We saw it with aQuantive, Softricity and Groove Networks.

It’s happened again with today’s $1.2 billion bid by Microsoft for Norway’s Fast Search and Transfer. Hasn’t it been obvious for more than three years (at the least) that enterprise information management is an essential task for just about any large company?

That’s why IBM has been buying up companies left and right, from Ascential to Filenet to Watchfire to Datamirror to Cognos. Oracle has been on a similar acquisitions track. Google has exceptionally produced search appliances (hardware!) to get a toe-hold in the on-premises search market, and Google and Yahoo! have also both been known to make acquisitions related to search. EMC even got it with Documentum.

Ya, that’s what I’d call obvious. What’s more, data warehousing, SAN, data marts and business intelligence (BI) have emerged as among the few consistent double-digit growth areas for IT spending the last few years.

This evening on that list, i found another short video from the folks at Digital Bazaar who produced this simple Semantic Web introduction, this time describing RDFa. I think that this new way of presenting concepts is awesome and i am glad to see many folks utilizing this methods (hats off i think goes to Michael Wesch for his inspirational “Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us” YouTube video which now has 4,195,123 views!!)

Net gehoord via Dutchcowboys en de Enterprise Search Blog… Microsoft heeft een bod gedaan op FAST. In verschillende blogs staat vermeld dat FAST een grote rol speelt op het gebied van internet search.

Naar mijn mening is FAST ook een grote en serieuze speler op het gebied van Enterprise search. Het afgelopen jaar heb ik een seminar mogen bijwonen van FAST (en partners) in het Amsterdam Mövenpick hotel. Daar is FAST ingegaan op search in combinatie met E-Commerce, maar ook op FAST en enterprise search.

FAST is de afgelopen jaren aggressief aan de weg aan het timmeren om naam en faam te krijgen op het gebied van enterprise search. Ze zijn een grote speler. Het afgelopen jaar kwam FAST negatief in het nieuws door de slechte (rode) kwartaalcijfers. Nu Microsoft een bod heeft gedaan op FAST zou je kunnen afleiden dat de rode kwartaalcijfers aanleiding zijn geweest voor overname. Voor de wantrouwenden onder ons is het zelfs mogelijk om te denken dat er reeds langere tijd overnamewensen zijn geweest tussen FAST en Microsoft.

Technologisch is FAST een koploper, getuige de Forrester Quadrant of information access waar zij samen met Endeca en Autonomy staan.

De overname is de volgende in de reeks van overnames die de afgelopen jaren de wereld van information access en enterprise search op hun grondvesten hebben doen schudden.  Neem de overname van Verity door Autonomy en de uitbreiding van Google.

Als het gaat om “power to execute”, staan Google en Microsoft aan top. Door de overname van FAST koopt Microsoft zich nu ook een plaats in het 1e kwadrant van Forrester. Google heeft dat kwadrant nog niet behaald.

Is Microsoft Google nu een stap voor? Of kan je visie niet kopen? Wat heeft deze overname voor consequenties voor Autonomy en Endeca? Is Autonomy de volgende kandidaat voor overname, bijv. door Google, die zich daarmee een plaats in de top-league kan kopen? Vergeet niet dat Google de “power to execute” heeft en Autonomy de visie.

Bill Gates neemt afscheid als voorman van Microsoft. Ben zeer benieuws wat het bedrijf zonder zijn bezielende leiding gaat doen. Wat zal de koers worden / blijven van MS de aankomende jaren? Gaan we verschil merken? Wat was het stempel dat Gates drukte op de visie en productontwikkeling van Microsoft?
