Roadsend PHP is a free, open source implementation of the PHP language. It includes a compiler that produces native binaries (no interpreter required). When a server sends a document to a user agent (eg. a browser) it also sends information in the Content-Type field of the accompanying HTTP header about what type of data format this is. This information is expressed using a MIME type label. This article provides a starting point for those needing to set the encoding information in the HTTP header.

I've had a number of people show interest in WebService::Solr since its release last fall. This is really encouraging.

Especially encouraging is seeing Eric Lease Morgan's first article in a series of three dealing with indexing and searching using WebService::Solr. The initial post deals with some basic definitions, setting up Solr and writing a basic set of indexing and searching scripts.

This posting (Part I) is an introduction to a Perl module called WebService::Solr. In it you will learn a bit of what Solr is, how it interacts with Lucene (an indexer), and how to write two trivial Perl scripts: 1) an indexer, and 2) a search engine. Part II of this series will introduce less trivial scripts — programs to index and search content from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Part III will demonstrate how to use WebService::Solr to implement an SRU interface against the index of DOAJ content. After reading each Part you should have a good overview of what WebService::Solr can do, but more importantly, you should have a better understanding of the role indexers/search engines play in the world of information retrieval.

To use Perl’s CPAN on Windows with cygwin, you need to install some additional programs in cygwin. Run cygwin’s setup.exe (I like clicking the “View” button to change the listing to Full, so I get an alphabetical list of the packages).
